Healthy nutrition is fundamental for lifelong health habits. This doesn’t have to wait for a child to be a toddler either. It can begin when a child is an infant. Unfortunately, kids are exposed to the opposite. TV commercials, billboards of fast food pleasure are everywhere. That doesn’t include peer pressure to eat what others eat. For example, when I was growing up, I often brought a nutritious lunch that was packed for me by my mother but I threw it out because other kids were going over to the local pizza place to get a slice.

The big question is what parents can do to start their kids with healthy habits that promote good nutrition. Also, how do parents do this without getting a hard time, each time from the kids? A few simple things to do are to get the kids involved in preparing the food. This is an excellent time to have the children get the hands on experience of helping prepare what they are going to eat. It helps inspire them to choose healthy options because they regularly are involved in the pre meal process. This helps create a lifelong pattern of good food choices along with learning how to prepare foods. As my wife would say, I could have been better served if I learned this as a child and would score some more points if I knew how to cook.

Children develop an affinity to what they eat most frequently and also what they enjoy eating. It is a bit of a challenge to make healthy choices appealing to your kids. Even if your intensions are good, it is easier said than done to convince a young child to eat Brussels sprouts when spaghetti and meatballs is so good. Same thing applies when the battle of oranges vs. Ice cream is on. However, don’t get discouraged. You can still ensure that your child’s diet is nutritious and tastes good and also still allow them to have the odd treat now and then.

Some tips for promoting healthy eating for your kids is to have regular family meals. When I grew up we rarely had meals at the table and were often sitting in front of the TV. It is also good to have dinner in and around the same time every evening and make sure that the entire family is sitting together. It is a great time to converse with family members and see how the day went. Breakfast is also another great time to have a family meal because it’s proven that kids, who have a healthy breakfast with family at the start of the day, will perform better in school.
